Cette conférence présentera les méthodes mises en oeuvre pour organiser et mener trois expéditions menées entre 2019 et 2023 dans le nord-ouest de l’Arabie à la recherche des pistes caravanières antiques entre plusieurs oasis. Elle présentera également les principaux résultats obtenus, à la fois pour le tracé des pistes, la manière dont ce dernier est déterminé pour assurer l'approvisionnement en eau des caravanes, la surveillance de la route et sa fréquentation telles que les inscriptions en diverses langues et écritures permettent de les appréhender.

Despite the conference's disappointing conclusion, the film highlights the urgent need for collective action among young people to address climate change, presenting them as agents of positive change amidst a challenging global landscape. In letzter Zeit werden Postkoloniale Theorien verschiedentlich und zuweilen mit grosser Vehemenz kritisiert. Hierbei erweist sich die gegenwärtige Debatte um Postkoloniale Theorien oftmals als polemisch und ebenso geprägt von Ressentiments wie von Missverständnissen.
Die Podiumsdiskussion versteht sich als Intervention gegen Vereinfachungen und sucht das differenzierte Gespräch darüber, was Postkoloniale Theorien sind, was sie zu leisten vermögen und wo ihre Schwächen liegen.
Auf dem Podium diskutieren vier Wissenschaftler:innen, die sich alle aus unterschiedlichen Perspektiven mit postkolonialen Theorien beschäftigen:

Die Veranstaltung wird mehrheitlich auf Deutsch durchgeführt. Teile davon auf Englisch. Für die deutschen Abschnitte wird eine englische Übersetzung angeboten.
Recently, postcolonial theories have been criticised in various ways and sometimes with great vehemence. The current debate on postcolonial theories often proves to be polemical and characterised by both resentment and misunderstandings.
The panel discussion sees itself as an intervention against simplifications and seeks a differentiated discussion about what postcolonial theories are, what they are capable of achieving and where their weaknesses lie.
The panel discussion will feature four researchers who all deal with postcolonial theories from different perspectives:

The vibrant life at the nanoscale

Proteins are the molecular makers in our body. They perform all vital tasks to maintain life as we know it: cell growth & division, genome replication & repair, energy harvesting & conversion, self-defence & attack, environmental sensing & reaction to it, etc. etc. To do this all, proteins undergo all kinds of dynamic rearrangements which are crucial for their function. However, still most visualisations of proteins are rock-solid static structures. Here, I’ll show you the tricks my lab plays to watch SINGLE protein molecules and how they move to complete their biological tasks at the nanoscale, to keep us alive at the macroscale.
Catalysis: the miracle of consumption and regeneration

A catalyst is a molecule that is capable of accelerating a chemical reaction from: A + B –> C As a result, the energy required to carry out such a reaction is significantly reduced. A large portion of all (bio)chemical reactions carried out in industry and in Nature are performed in the presence of a catalyst. In the past twenty years, five Nobel prizes in chemistry have been awarded for contributions in the field of catalysis.
This talk will present important applications of catalysts and highlight the impact of catalysis on society and its future development.

Trouble Brewing

How to brew the perfect pint of beer? This presentation will cover some of the science and technology behind the brewing process and will highlight when problems arise leading to the imperfect pint. Such problems range from sub-standard raw materials, to processing difficulties, to use of incorrect yeast strains, to stuck and sluggish fermentations, to contaminating microbes, to flavour defects in the final product. Beer is a wonderful beverage with a huge diversity of beer styles now available, including some delightful Swiss craft beers, but occasionally things go wrong. This talk will deal with the science behind a perfect pint!
The Stars in Your Beer

Did you know that the stars in the sky not only look pretty but also have a connection to the beer you are enjoying? The contents of a pint of beer (water, alcohol, tasty ingredients) are made of chemical elements like Carbon and Oxygen and many others. These were created in stars which have existed billions of years ago. A brief overview is given of how this worked and how science uncovers the details of the underlying processes.
Energy Communities in Europe: What we know from the Horizon Europe Enpower Project

The Clean Energy for all Europeans package (2019) and the Renewable Energy Directive (2018) paved the way for Renewable Energy Communities (RECs) to become part of the energy landscape of the EU. Although progress is heterogeneous across different member states, increasing citizen engagement in such projects is a shared interest throughout the EU. RECs greatly increase the complexity of energy markets, whilst simultaneously providing greater energy security and aiding in decarbonization efforts, hence attracting and retaining citizen engagement is vital if they are to become prevalent. In this talk I will highlight key findings regarding engagement in energy communities from our Horizon Europe Enpower Project.
